In the history of Indonesia Islam has never achieved its goal to govern Indonesia according to its Islamic law. But the struggle for achieving the goal is actually never give up until now, and many (although compared to the whole Muslim population the group is not more half of it) Muslims are still struggling to the Islamic supreme end. In the history Indonesia since the independence there have aspiration for building Islamic state in Indonesia, and the aspiration was struggled by the founding of Masyumi party that comprise of many modernist Islamic organizations. This party got much supports in Sumatra, south Sulawesi and west java, but the party is weak in most Islamic population in east and central java. Here another Islamic party, NU, was occupier. Masyumi that finally proved had a link to the Islamic rebellion of PRRI was banned by Sukarno and many of its leaders was sent to prison. After the rise of New Order the rehabilitation of Masyumi has become the main agenda for some Masyumi supporters. But the fact says that the rehabilitation plan of this party was finally failed in the hand of authoritarian military government.
The failure of the aspiration is clearly caused by the diversity amongst the Muslim people themselves. Indonesia at that time is comprised of more that 80% Muslim that actually is more than enough number to direct Indonesian history and governance into Islamic state. But the diversity amongst them has caused the failure of it prevailed. Amongst the Muslims themselves there were several groups with different opinions about what Indonesian history had to be directed. Other than Masyumi with its Islamic state aspiration, there are some traditionalist (NU) and nationalist parties that in fact also powerful. The discussion or actually dispute among these three groups concerning the ideal of Islamic state is so hot like we can see from Sukarno letter where he gave new meaning to Islam as newer and criticized they (Masyumi) who want to stay in the lifestyle of seven century where the prophet lived where they can ride camel and eat without spoon.
The disputes about it were/ are going on until now. The readings tell us about the disputes. Between in one side the aspiration of Islamic state and in other side the aspiration of Indonesian nationalism the dispute about how as a Muslim they can deal with it, and especially how they can responsible as a Muslim in Indonesian nearly 90% Muslim population context; do it responsible for them not to try implementing Islamic law, syaria, as Islamic state in this kind of fit context? Some nationalist Muslim with many of the have western education background that Islam do not have to live within Islamic state and in some ‘secular’ state like Indonesia Muslim still can observing their religious duties and become a good Muslim. But in the contrary the proponent of Islamic state, an Islamic state is the dead price for Muslim to be a good Muslim. The disputes are lasting long in the history of Indonesia without any solution or middle path for the disputing groups. Some time I wonder is there any special hidden selfish interest among the groups so that they can stand in the position regardless any changed conditions?
